Janmashtami is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. It is also known as Krishnashtami, Janmashtami, or Gokulashtami.

Date: The festival is celebrated on the eighth day of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in Shravana Masa (August–September) according to the Hindu calendar. In 2024, it was on August 26th.   

Significance: Krishna is a revered figure in Hinduism, known for his wisdom, compassion, and divine playfulness.

                                                               The festival honors his birth and celebrates his teachings and miracles.   

Celebrations: The festival is marked by various rituals, including :- 

Fasting: Devotees often fast for the entire day or until midnight, the traditional time of Krishna birth.

Decorations: Homes and temples are decorated with flowers, lights, and colorful banners.

Worship: Krishna idols are bathed, dressed in new clothes, and worshipped with prayers and offerings.

Midnight Celebrations: At midnight, the birth of Krishna is reenacted with great enthusiasm.

Dahi Handi: In some regions, a competition called Dahi Handi is held, where teams try to climb a human pyramid to reach and break a pot of curd hanging high above.

Regional Variations: The celebrations may vary slightly depending on the region, but the core themes of devotion and joy remain the same.

Krishna Birth: Krishna was born in Mathura, India, to Devaki and Vasudeva. His birth was a miracle, as he was born in a prison to protect him from the evil King Kansa.   

Childhood and Youth: Krishna spent his childhood in Vrindavan, where he played with the cowherd boys and girls.

He performed many miraculous deeds, such as defeating demons and rescuing his mother from Kansa.
